Luen Wo Story
Located in Luen Wo Hui, Fanling, Luen Wo Market is an innovative local community platform, engaging the sustainable community development with new and down-to-earth ideas and tools to promote local food & agriculture, and so as to help build a local food production chain between the producers and the consumers.
Assessed as a Grade III historic building by the Antiquities Advisory Board in 2010, Luen Wo Market was selected as a suitable government-owned historic building during the fifth phase of the “Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme” in 2016, led by the Commissioner for Heritage’s Office under the Development Bureau. The revitalization plan, spearheaded by Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, commenced with the official launch of conservation and restoration work in 2017. We are delighted to announce that Luen Wo Market will resume operations in the 1st Quarter of 2024.
At Luen Wo Market, we offer a diverse range of stalls showcasing local agriculture products, echoes the old Market as a fresh food market in the district, and create network with local farmers; Our establishment also features small brands that introduce craft creations with local characteristics. During weekends, we will set up an outdoor bazaar where visitors can enjoy local snacks and browse through handicraft items. It’s an experience that transports you back to the vibrant heydays of the market, bustling with people day and night.
Our goal at Luen Wo Market is to foster communication and interaction within the community. We aim to promote the consumption of local foods and drive community-based economics. We organize different themed exhibitions related to local agriculture, urban and rural areas, constantly exploring the possibilities of the surrounding public spaces. The market serves as a meeting point where people from different walks of life can share their life experiences and stories, fostering ideas of urban-rural exchanges. Luen Wo Market stands as a central landmark of the Northern Metropolis and Hong Kong’s first market at the intersection of urban and rural areas.
