The Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service’s “Luen Wo Market – Urban and Rural Living Museum” proposal was selected for the fifth phase of the Revitalization of the Historic Buildings Partnership Scheme to revitalize Luen Wo Market. The plan hopes to reproduce and extend the original purpose of the Lien Wo Market. In addition to preserving the historical original appearance and space of the building, it will also set up high-quality local food stalls in the market to sell local reputable and organic vegetables and promote local agricultural products. More income channels; the plan will also set up small community shops, craft shops, and weekend outdoor markets to sell groceries, traditional snacks, and special handicrafts, so as to maintain the taste of the market and promote the regional economy.

There will be urban and rural themed exhibitions in the “Lian Wo Market – Urban and Rural Living Museum”, discussing topics such as local agriculture, market policies, urban and rural changes, development of the Northeast New Territories, environment and ecological conservation. It also includes the history of squatter houses and walled villages in the North District, allowing visitors to experience life in urban and rural areas, thereby passing on the history of Lien Wo to the younger generation. The plan is expected to start from Lien Wo Market and connect the entire North District. Among them, the guided walking and cycling tours designed for the public will cover Luen Wo Hui and the nearby countryside and historic sites, as well as the Long Valley and the entire Northeast New Territories, so as to increase the public’s understanding of rural life, culture and urban-rural relations.

In order to present the historical original appearance of Lianhe Market and comply with sustainable development, this revitalization plan incorporates natural ventilation, natural light introduction panels, green roofs, water features and other environmental protection elements. On the other hand, the project preserves the openness of the interior of the original historic building and the existing public space, allowing the public to appreciate the original appearance of the characteristic and meaningful architectural design of Lien Wo Market.

In addition to the Conservation Association and the market, this project also hopes to promote the economic and sustainable development of the area. After the opening of Luen Wo Market, the plan will provide employment opportunities for local residents and disadvantaged groups, allowing them to give full play to their strengths to contribute to society, enhance self-identity, build community cohesion and enhance residents’ sense of belonging to the community, so as to promote the local economy.
